Swordtails are colorful community fish that are perfect for someone looking for a slightly larger beginner fish. As one of the staples of the aquarium hobby, Swordtails have been line bred to display a rainbow of colors and patterns. Differentiating males from females is easy for even the unseasoned hobbyist as a male will develop the classic sword and females will not. They will do best in a minimum of trios, and will thrive best with more males than females. Swordtails will give live birth often in the home aquarium and many hobbyist have success in raising the babies into adults.

  • Life expectancy is 3 to 5 years.
  • Max size is 5 inches

  • Tank requirements: Minimum of 15 gallon aquarium with extra filtration that is regularly maintained. Bala sharks reach a max size of over 12 inches and need room to swim.
  • Owner experience level = Beginner
  • Introduction to tank: Add to a well established aquarium and will get along with a passive to slightly more boisterous community aquarium fish. Excess babies should be relocated to prevent overstocking.
  • Décor: Thrive with décor they can easily swim around and benefit from live plants.
  • Water conditions: Adaptable to a range of water parameters when acclimated properly.
  • Cleaning: 25% of the aquarium water should be vacuumed and replaced each week
  • Additional information: Use conditioner for tap water
